Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Northbound traffic between Cancun and Playa del Carmen came to a complete stop Tuesday. Vehicles were blocked when a flatbed semi transporting a large piece of industrial equipment slipped off the highway.
The incident was reported approximately 24 kilometers south of Cancun Tuesday night. Dozens of stranded motorists made reports to officials around 9:00 p.m.
National Guard Highways were sent in to assess the situation. At the scene, they found the oversized flatbed completely blocking both northbound lanes. The semi slid off the highway, leaving the cab in brush and the rear of the bed over the road.

Riviera Maya traffic was heavily congested for hours while authorities worked to remove the load. Personnel from the Cancun fire department, along with the Municipal Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) paramedics and National Guard traveled to the site of the accident.
Paramedics accessed the driver of the semi along the roadside and determined that although he did suffer injuries, he did not require a hospital transfer.
Early information says the driver of the semi had left Playa del Carmen heading for Cancun when he accidently veered off the road. The unit was unable to move since the front tires of the semi were found tightly lodged between large rocks.
Due to its weight and size, industrial tow trucks were brought in which further complicated traffic congestion. The northbound highway outside Cancun was shut for several hours while the load was cleared.
