Sedena has green light to build along Bacalar Lagoon

Bacalar, Q.R. — According to state officials, Sedena has a green light to build along the Bacalar Lagoon. The State Secretary says details surrounding the project have not been made public since it is a military zone.

State Secretary Cristina Torres says the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena) building project has all the necessary permits to construct a facility for its military members. The single-level building will be a retirement home.

“We are working on communicating with the public. It was very clear that at first it was a matter of information, but now it has been clarified. The designs have been seen, everything has been seen,” she said adding that since it is a military zone, the details of the project could not be made public.

In response to ongoing protests and complaints, the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) and the National Water Commission (Conagua), among others, have said they would verify the project.

Bacalar Citizen Council spokesperson Carlos Mendoza Gutiérrez stated that the working group confirmed that the Sedena project met all the requirements and could therefore move forward.

Hours before the meeting, Conagua’s Erika Ramírez Méndez, said that an inspection would be carried out at the construction site, which is located in front of the San Felipe Fort.

Ramírez Méndez said during their tour, documents were in order and there was no irregularities or environmental damage.

On Monday, protestors blocked a lane of highway while authorities toured the worksite. Protestors have been at the site since the start of construction more than a week ago.
