Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Despite sargassum flooding in some areas of Playa del Carmen, officials say it has not had an impact on reservations. Estefanía Hernández, the municipality’s Secretary of Tourism, says cleanup efforts have gone a long way to ensuring tourists continue to arrive.

According to Hernández the sargassum arrival has not had an impact on tourist reservations so far and that beach cleans launched by Mayor Estefanía Mercado has helped maintain the destination’s image.
Over the weekend, a 70-person team led by members of the Mexican Association of Businesswomen, organized a sargassum beach clean at Playa Pelícanos from where they reported lifting 14 tons of sargassum.
Hernández called on the public to join in these types of efforts which are carried out daily at various points along Playa del Carmen’s 22 beaches.

“Community collaboration is essential to address this emergency and protect our tourism industry,” she said.
The organized beach cleans will continue in following months with the forecast of more sargassum arrival for the coast of Quintana Roo.
