The remains were located on lands adjacent to the town of Kantunilkín in the municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas in the northern region of Quintana Roo. State authorities have said the bones are being analyzed and once identified, the family will be notified.

“Human bone remains were found which will be analyzed for identification, and if the result is a positive identification, their respective notification and dignified delivery to their relatives will proceed,” the State Attorney General (FGE) said in a statement.

The group of searchers included personnel from the FGE as well as elements of the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC). The removal of the remains found were done with the help of expert anthropologists “in order to carry out the extraction with great care to preserve them in the best way and to be able to determine the number of bodies located and their identity,” the FGE reported.

“In a first analysis, forensic experts and anthropologists determined that the seven bone remains found had been buried there for approximately four years.

“It should be noted that the search for human remains will continue in the same area, as there are more caverns in the ground which will be thoroughly inspected to rule out, or if necessary confirm and extract, the presence of more bones,” the agency explained.
