Cancun, Q.R. — A search and recovery team located the body of a man who jumped into a Cancun lagoon Sunday evening. Cancun firemen and Civil Protection began their search after receiving a report of a missing person due to a possible drowning.
Witnesses at the lagoon reported the man had jumped into the water around 7:00 p.m. but did not surface. When they saw his white ballcap floating, they called 9-1-1.
According to the Cancun fire department personnel who attended the scene, a search for the body was started and “after intensive work” using a flashlight, the body was located in approximately five meters of water.
The man’s body was located just before dusk. The deceased, who has not been identified, is said to have been around 35 years old.
The El Pedregal neighborhood lagoon is not an authorized swimming lagoon, noted the Cancun fire department in a statement.

“We received a report of a missing person who went swimming in the lagoon located in the El Pedregal neighborhood. Immediately, fire department personnel and Cancun Civil Protection lifeguards activated the search protocol, carrying out maneuvers with the aid of flashlights in low visibility conditions.
“After intensive work, the body was located at a depth of approximately five meters. We are currently awaiting for Forensic Medical Services (SEMEFO) personnel to conduct the corresponding examination and follow up on the investigation.
“We reiterate to the public the importance of not swimming in unauthorized bodies of water, especially in unsupervised areas and in dangerous conditions. Prevention saves lives.

“On behalf of the Heroic Cancún Fire Department, we send our condolences to the family. We will continue working to protect our community and promote a culture of safety,” Bomberos Cancun reported regarding the Sunday lagoon tragedy.
