School closed and more than two dozen kids isolated with hand foot and mouth disease

Tulum, Q.R. — A kindergarten school in Tulum has been closed for a week and more than two dozen isolated due to a virus outbreak. The school was closed when more than two dozen kids became infected with a coxsackievirus infection.

Flavio Carlos Rosado, the Secretary of Health of Quintana Roo, says the virus was detected in a total of 36 kids who have since been isolated. He confirmed the infection is not chickenpox but hand, foot and mouth disease.

“It is not chickenpox but rather a virus that affects children under five years of age. The virus causes mouth sores and rashes, a disease known as hand, foot and mouth disease, which is highly contagious,” he explained.

Carlos Rosado said that the school where the infection was found has been closed for seven days to prevent further infections. Epidemiological measures and protocols have already been implemented in conjunction with the Ministry of Education and the Tulum Municipal Health Department.

“We are monitoring the cases of sick children who so far report stable health and are doing well,” he noted. According to Carlos Rosado, only one school in the municipality has reported the infection.
