Savannah search continues for missing Chetumal fisherman

Chetumal, Q.R. — One person was rescued while a search continues for a second in the Chetumal Savannah. Nearby residents heard cries for help Wednesday by a fishermen who became stuck in thick mud.

Members of the community who heard the cries went out in a boat and were able to save the man they heard. However, a second man remains missing. Chetumal search and rescue scoured the Savannah in search of the second fisherman, but were unable to locate him.

That rescue mission has since become a recovery mission for the man who, authorities say, has likely drowned.

The incident happened in an area of the Savannah located between Maxuxac and Colibrí Streets in Chetumal. The rescued man cried for help after becoming stuck in thick mud while fishing. After citizens rescued the first man, local authorities were notified of a second considered missing.

A search and rescue operation for the second fisherman was activated that included personnel from the Quintana Roo Emergency Commission, the Secretariat of Citizen Security, fire department, paramedics and citizens.

The rescued fisherman was treated for hypothermia by paramedics from the Firefighters Medical Unit before being transferred to hospital.

As of midday Wednesday, the search for the second missing person continued without success. People who fish in the Savannah say the missing fisherman could have been swept away by the strong current or encountered a crocodile. Search operations continue in boats.
