Sanitary Risk Protection Coordinator of Tulum suspended after accusations of business extortion

Tulum, Q.R. — Another municipal worker in Tulum has been suspended from his job on allegations of extortion. On Wednesday, the Quintana Roo Secretary of Heatlh reported on the suspension of Emigdio Morales Mezquita.

According to the Secretary, Morales Mezquita held the position of Service Counter Supervisor for the Central Zone’s Sanitary Risk Protection Coordination in Tulum.

He was removed from his position Wednesday after being accused of creating false charges to Tulum business owners.

In a statement, the Quintana Roo Health Secretariat confirmed the investigation into the complaints and his immediate removal from his position.

“The Quintana Roo Health Secretariat is strengthening transparency and institutional collaboration measures,” they said in an official statement.

“It announces that as a preventive administrative step, and to facilitate investigations into public allegations regarding the municipality of Tulum, Emigdio Morales Mezquita has been removed from his position as the Service Counter Supervisor for the Central Zone’s Sanitary Risk Protection Coordination in Tulum.

“This decision reflects the institution’s commitment to ensuring that inquiries are conducted with complete objectivity and impartiality, free from interference, while upholding due process and the presumption of innocence at all times.

“Through its Directorate of Sanitary Risk Protection, the Health Secretariat maintains close coordination with the Federal Commission for Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) and other competent authorities to immediately address and investigate any complaints.

“Furthermore, it is reiterated that sanitary regulation and oversight activities in Quintana Roo are continuing as normal.

“The State Health Secretariat reaffirms its zero-tolerance policy regarding any conduct that violates the law. It pledges to act with firmness and transparency, in strict adherence to the legal framework, while fully cooperating with competent authorities until the facts are clarified,” Secretaría de Salud Quintana Roo.”

Last month, Tulum Mayor Diego Castañón Trejo announced the removal of nine municipal employees from his administration for accusations of extortion.
