Mahahual, Q.R. — Royal Caribbean has partnered with Mares Center for Environmental Restoration and Conservation in Mahahual. Mares has been present in Mahahual since 2019 when they started the Mahahual Coral Restoration Project.

In a statement, Royal Caribbean says they have partnered with Mares, an alliance that includes a fund of $50,000 US dollars, the creation of local jobs in Mahahual and the preservation of key ecosystems in southeastern Mexico.
As part of its ongoing commitment to sustainable development and the well-being of the communities where it operates, Royal Caribbean International has announced a partnership with the MARES Center organization, focused on the restoration and conservation of coastal ecosystems in Mahahual, Quintana Roo.
The collaboration is aligned with Royal Caribbean Group’s SEA the Future commitment, which seeks to offer the best vacation experiences in a responsible manner, caring for the planet, empowering communities and promoting innovation.
As part of this partnership, Royal Caribbean will allocate a fund of $50,000 USD, which will be focused on ecosystem restoration and educational activities. The initiative includes a comprehensive project to restore mangroves, dunes and seagrass beds, essential for the conservation of coral reefs and other marine species.

The goal is to restore 20 hectares of critical ecosystems through actions such as the recovery of hydrological flow in mangroves, the replanting of native species on the coast and the active conservation of seagrass beds.
To achieve these conservation objectives, priority will be given to hiring local residents, generating direct employment and encouraging community participation.
The partnership also includes a strong environmental education and community training component that provides the community with tools and knowledge to support ecosystem sustainability and restoration. Actions range from educational workshops for children, the community and private sector employees to training local women in diving and marine conservation.

Restoration activities are scheduled to begin in 2025 once the necessary preparations have been completed and the most suitable areas for the works have been confirmed.
In October of 2024, Royal Caribbean announced signing an agreement to acquire the Port of Costa Maya, the cruise ship area of the town of Mahahual. There, the cruise ship company says they plan to open a Perfect Day Mexico beach club for cruise passengers.

The $600 million USD Royal Caribbean beach club will offer cruise ship passengers an “all-new thrilling waterpark, jaw-dropping pools and beaches, restaurants, bars, music and more,” announced Royal Caribbean’s Senior Vice President and Chief Product Innovation Officer, Jay Schneider.
In March of 2024, Royal Caribbean announced a similar beach club project on the island of Cozumel.
