Royal Caribbean begins rebuilding of main avenue into Mahahual

Mahahual, Q.R. — Royal Caribbean has officially begun road work on the main entrance to the Mahahual cruise ship port. Work was started over the weekend with the filling of holes and removal of pavers.

Rehabilitation of the town’s main Avenida del Puerto has been a long-standing request by both businesses and local residents. Over the weekend, basic work to fill large potholes and remove sections of pavers to expose the road was started.

The rebuilding work has begun at the intersection of Avenida del Puerto and the streets parallel to it. The rehabilitation of Mahahual’s roads are part of the company’s plan with the revamping of the cruise ship port that they purchased earlier this year.

Street repairs are part of the agreements made with the state government and the Othón P. Blanco City Council, which will improve access infrastructure into the town of Mahahual and in particular, to the cruise ship port.

Area resident Luis “M” called the start of the road work “a key step toward strengthening the community’s tourism and economic activity.”

This initial work project of Las Casitas, which also includes the installation of modern street lighting and road signs, is expected to be finished before the start of the upcoming Christmas holiday season.

On October 8, Royal Caribbean representatives Jay Schnider and Adler Brotman said road repair for the town of Mahahual was part of the company’s master plan.

Also included is the construction of an reverse osmosis system and water treatment plant that will benefit the entire town, a new artesian market, grocery store, the clean up of contaminated mangroves and a revamped cruise port capable of receiving state-of-the-art ships.
