Riviera Maya tourism secretary working to create Quintana Roo-Yucatan Cenote Corridor

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Riviera Maya tourism authorities have announced an initiative to create an extensive Cenote Corridor. The corridor would be a regional strategy to promote alternative and sustainable tourism in coordination with destinations between Quintana Roo and Yucatan.

Estefanía Hernández, the Secretary of Playa del Carmen Municipal Tourism, explained that the goal is to diversify tourism through an inter-destination campaign. That campaign will include Valladolid and Merida in the state of Yucatan and Tulum, Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Puerto Morelos, Cozumel and Playa del Carmen in Quintana Roo.

While acknowledging that beaches continue to be the main attraction of the Mexican Caribbean, she emphasized that cenotes represent a unique differentiator worldwide, something that the Peninsula is known for.

Hernández said they currently are working with the Ministry of Environment, the municipalities and specialized organizations such as Urban Cenotes and Water Sentinels to create the corridor.

Each cenote, she noted, will be technically evaluated to verify that it meets criteria for sustainability, water quality, accessibility and responsible management before becoming part of the official Cenote Corridor.

She reported that the proposal is designed to be consolidated over the long term and will be officially presented at the 2026 International Tourism Fair in Spain.

Hernández says with the corridor up and running, Quintana Roo and Yucatan will position cenotes as an icon of sustainable tourism and strengthen their role as a driver of regional development.
