Residents readying for a week of cool as Arctic air mass forecast to sweep across Yucatan Peninsula

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Rain is likely for the Yucatan Peninsula Monday with the arrival of Arctic air. Cold front 30 is making its way toward the region and is expected to start affecting temperatures late Monday.

Mexico’s National Meteorological Service (SMN) has forecast cold front number 30 to move across the southern Gulf of Mexico, southeastern Mexico and the Yucatán Peninsula starting Monday afternoon.

“The cold air will bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to these regions. Intense to torrential downpours are forecast for Veracruz, Oaxaca, and Chiapas.” Between 25 and 50 mm of rain could fall in some regions.

“The Arctic air mass associated with the front will maintain very cold to frigid conditions with morning fog banks over states in the Northern Plateau, the Central Plateau and eastern and southeastern Mexico, including the Valley of Mexico.

“A very strong to intense north wind with high waves is also expected along the Gulf of Mexico coast, the Yucatan Peninsula and the Isthmus and Gulf of Tehuantepec. Additionally, there is a possibility of snow or sleet on the peaks of Cofre de Perote and Pico de Orizaba.”

On Tuesday, cold front number 30 will extend as a stationary front over the western Caribbean Sea. Strong to intense “Norte” wind event will continue , with gusts of 90 to 110 km/h in the Isthmus and Gulf of Tehuantepec (Oaxaca and Chiapas), 50 to 70 km/h in Veracruz and Quintana Roo, and gusts of 40 to 60 km/h in Tamaulipas, Tabasco, Campeche and Yucatán, the SMN (Servicio Meteorológico Nacional) said.

During Wednesday and Thursday, the Arctic air mass associated with cold front number 30 will modify its thermal characteristics, favoring a gradual rise in temperatures.
