More than a dozen injured in six vehicle pileup on busy Cancun Avenue

Cancun, Q.R. — A six vehicle pileup on Nichupté Avenue left at least 17 people injured Thursday morning. The pileup happened a few meters from the intersection with Kabah Avenue where a pickup rear-ended a city combi.

According to initial reports, the accident occurred when a pickup truck rear-ended a public transport van that was covering the Nichupté-Plaza Américas route.

The force of the impact propelled the passenger van into another vehicle in front of it, causing a chain reaction that ended up damaging six vehicles.

Emergency serives arrived to find the front of the van completely destroyed, while several private vehicles were found with considerable damage.

Cancun firemen were called in to assist in the removal of several trapped people from inside the combi where a majority of the injured were located.

Several people involved in the accident were treated by paramedics for minor injuries at the scene, however, at least two people were taken to hospital with more serious injuries.

Members of the Cancun Fire Department, Civil Protection, Municipal Transit and paramedics all responded to reports of the city crash. Area traffic was heavily affetected for several hours while emergency crews worked and tow truck removed the damaged vehicles.
