Mahahual, Q.R. — A group of residents from an irregular settlement in Mahahual protested their probable eviction outside Chetumal city hall Friday. The small group of around 50 live in an irregular settlement known as La Victoria Ranch, located just outside the town of Mahahual.
The group of residents arrived with handmade signs stressing their concern at being evicted due to unresolved legal land title issues. One of the protestors, Marina “E”, said the group of around 50 residents are asking authorities to review the case since a previous trial was mishandled through falsified documents.
The group have come forward now because, according to Marina “E”, they have an eviction deadline and some of the residents have lived on that land for as long as 24 years.
Earlier this month, the Agencia de Proyectos Estratégicos del Gobierno de Quintana Roo (Agepro) began a regularization program for several of the irregular settlements around Mahahual.
According to Agepro Dirctor José Alberto Alonso Ovando, the agency is working on the regularization of four of the six irregular settlements. Settlements Orgullo, Chechen, el km 55 and Flamingos will be regularized.
As for the other two, La Victoria and Banicero, those settlements will remain pending since they are in the middle of a legal situation regarding property titles.
