Chetumal, Q.R. — The taxi driver’s union in Chetumal has submitted the paperwork they say is required for a fare increase. The Sindicato Único de Choferes de Automóviles de Alquiler (Suchaa) drivers have been pushing for a huge 40 percent increase in fares.
The request for the increase was submitted Saturday to the Instituto de Movilidad de Quintana Roo (Imoveqroo), who oversee all state mobility.
Suchaa union leader Julio César Castilla says he is confident that before the end of the year, taxi fare adjustments will be authorized. He says Chetumal city taxi drivers are facing operating costs increases in gas and maintenance, something that has been detailed in his submission to the Quintana Roo Mobility Institute (Imoveqroo).
He explained that with the Imoveqroo leadership change a few months ago, they have resumed talks with the new boss to finalize the adjustments in taxi fares, “since six years have passed without a response to our requests despite the fact that during this period there has been a constant increase in the price of gasoline, as well as spare parts and other supplies.”

He clarified that this time they are requesting fare adjustments based on the area covered. He said it is not profitable for taxi drivers to cover areas to Calderitas and other nearby neighborhoods including points that are far from the city center.
“We are already in talks and we will make that adjustment this year. In the last quarter, Imoveqroo must conduct a review and diagnostic of the application as well as the studies that have been submitted and updated,” he explained.

He says a fare increase for Chetumal city cab drivers is considered urgent since it has become unsustainable with current rates. He added that they have already held meetings with the new head of Imoveqroo to move the request forward.
The Chetumal taxi driver’s union is requesting to be able to charge between 30 and 40 percent more for cab fares.
