Riviera Maya, Q.R. — While area forest fires are not out, their intensity has been diminished somewhat by the recent rain. The Dispatch Manager of the Civil Protection Directorate, Alejandro Hendricks Interian, said the recent rainfall has reduced the intensity of the forest fires.
“The intensity of the fires has been reduced. We still have 13 that are active. The two largest cover between 500 to 800 hectares and are 80 percent controlled.
“We hope that the rainfall forecast for the weekend will help put them out. Let us remember that the fire season ends with the beginning of the hurricane season,” he said noting they are still fighting fires into the second official week of the start of the hurricane season.
He said a majority of the fires are along highways outside the city, but some are near populate areas.
The SPC (Secretaría de Protección Civil, Prevención de Riesgos y Bomberos) of Solidaridad has reported on the continued battle of at least one fire.
“The ocelot and rhinoceros brigades of the operational management and firefighters respectively, are working on the forest fire in the community of San Carlos, manually creating firebreaks, having 95% control and 80% liquidation.”
Hendricks Interian says the 2024 forest fire season saw figures triple that of last year. An official count of the number of fires this year is still underway.
