Rain and cool temps forecast for Yucatan Peninsula with arrival of cold front

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — A new cold front entering the Gulf of Mexico will create wind and rain for the Peninsula Thursday. State Civil Protection issued a thunderstorm warning for the municipalities of Lázaro Cárdenas, Isla Mujeres, Benito Juárez, Puerto Morelos, Othón P. Blanco and Bacalar.

The cold air started to hit the region Wednesday night. State Civil Protection (Coordinación Estatal de Protección Civil Quintana Roo) says cold front 28 will affect temperatures for a few days.

“The approach and movement of cold front 28 over the northern portion of the Yucatan Peninsula and the influx of moisture from the Caribbean Sea towards the region will cause cloudy skies in the state of Quintana Roo during the day.

“Heavy rains with very heavy rainfall accompanied by electrical activity are also expected. The daytime environment will be hot and warm to temperate at dawn, the wind will be from the northeast in the afternoon-evening with gusts of 50 to 70 kms/h and waves of 2 to 4 meters high in Campeche, Yucatan, and Quintana Roo (north),” they reported Thursday.

According to Mexico’s Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (SMN), cold front No. 28 will extend over the southern Gulf of Mexico and the Yucatan Peninsula, causing torrential rains in Veracruz, Tabasco and Chiapas, intense rains in Oaxaca and very heavy rains in Campeche, Yucatan and Quintana Roo.

“The arctic air mass associated with the frontal system will maintain a freezing environment at dawn in the north of the national territory and cold to cool in the afternoon in the northeast, east and center of the country.

“A strong to intense “Norte” event will also be felt on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, Isthmus and Gulf of Tehuantepec, in addition to the Yucatan Peninsula,” they said.

Meteorologists say the cold air will likely last into the weekend, creating rain and high waves due to strong wind gusts. Those strong gusts could affect ferry crossings between Cancun and Isla Mujeres as well as between Playa del Carmen and Cozumel.
