Quintana Roo port authorities considering onshore power supply technology

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — The Quintana Roo Port Authority (APIQROO) is looking into incorporating onshore power supply technology around the state. Apiqroo head Vagner Elbiorn Vega, participated in the Port Opportunities Summit and Exhibition with Energy, Resilience and Sustainability (POWERS) in Tampa, Florida earlier this week.

He explained that the international forum allows strengthening the state’s port modernization initiatives with a sustainable approach, aligned with the vision of Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa, to promote a New Era of sustainable and resilient tourism.

The summit, organized by the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) Committee on the Environment, addresses the most innovative trends in balancing economic growth, environmental sustainability and social justice in port operations.

During his participation, Elbiorn Vega stressed the importance of incorporating Onshore Power Supply (OPS) technologies in the ports of Quintana Roo. This technology allows docked vessels to connect to the onshore power grid, eliminating the use of auxiliary engines that emit polluting gases.

“Adopting OPS will allow us to significantly reduce carbon emissions and improve the quality of life of port communities, aligning us with global sustainability best practices,” he said.

The use of OPS is part of the Administración Portuaria Integral de Quintana Roo (APIQROO) strategy to integrate clean and sustainable energy solutions, in line with the objectives of the 2030 Port Agenda.

For this reason, APIQROO will seek to ensure that the state’s ports implement Onshore Power Supply to stay up to date with global trends in environmental protection, positioning Quintana Roo as a leader in green tourism and sustainable port operations.

During the event, he also held a meeting with Cary S. Davis, President and CEO of the American Association of Port Authorities, where they exchanged perspectives on strategies to promote sustainability in Caribbean port operations and strengthen international collaboration on port innovation.

Elbiorn Vega was accompanied by the Secretary General and the Strategic Planning Manager of APIQROO, Francisco Díaz Lara and Francisco Amaro, respectively.
