Riviera Maya, Q.R. — The government of Quintana Roo has announced the construction of 36,000 new homes for the working class. The building is part of a national urban development strategy to ensure affordable housing.
José Alberto Alonso Ovando, the Secretariat of Sustainable Urban Territorial Development (Sedatus), says the initial phase of the program includes the construction of at least 2,600 homes. Initial construction will include the municipalities of Benito Juárez (Cancun), Cozumel and Tulum, particularly in the town of Chemuyil.
Alonso Ovando explained that the building will be carried out by the National Workers’ Housing Fund Institute (Infonavit) and the National Housing Commission (CONAVI) with the support of the state government.
He says the state will provide land for the development of the housing complexes.
“The demand for housing in Quintana Roo is high due to the constant growth of its population. Therefore, these initiatives seek to address this historical gap and facilitate access to decent housing for workers,” he said.

The Secretario de Desarrollo Territorial Urbano Sustentable (Sedatus) head stressed that coordination between the municipal, state and federal governments will be key to achieving their goal.
He says the housing project is within the framework of the national project promoted by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, which joins other efforts to mitigate the state’s housing shortage amid accelerated growth driven by tourism, internal migration, and urban expansion.
