Quintana Roo modernizes agriculture with solar powered irrigation system

Pucté, Othón P. Blanco — Farmers in the state’s south have started a new season with modern irrigation. On Wednesday, authorities implemented the Well 9 irrigation system which will allow for improved production.

The implementation of this system is part of the Program to Support Hydro-Agricultural Infrastructure, run by the National Water Commission (Conagua).

The system consists of 128 solar panels to run a fixed sprinkler system for ejido farmers in the south April 29, 2026.

Jorge Aguilar Osorio, The head of the Secretariat of Agricultural, Rural, and Fisheries Development (SEDARPE) says the new system seeks to rehabilitate, modernize, conserve and equip irrigation systems to maintain productivity in the agricultural field.

Aguilar Osorio stated the tripartite investment amounts to just over 3.3 million pesos, of which the Federal Government, through CONAGUA, contributes 1.4 million pesos. The remaining money came from the State Government, through SEDARPE, who contributed 708,560 pesos and the beneficiaries themselves with just over 1.1 million pesos.

He explained that the irrigation system consists of the modernization of a deep well equipped with a 60 hp submersible pump powered by 128 solar panels of 610 watts, for a fixed sprinkler system.

This system will cover 50 hectares of sugarcane and pasture in direct support to a producer.

The project involved the Board of Directors of Ribera del Río Hondo AC and Hydro-agricultural Users, Conagua, and representatives of the Quintana Roo sugarcane associations.
