Quintana Roo governor meets with U.S. Consul ahead of Freedom 250

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — The governor of Quintana Roo met with U.S. Consul General Justen A. Thomas Tuesday. The pair met in the city of Merida, Yucatan in early recognition of Freedom 250.

Quintana Roo Governor Mara Lezama met with Thomas, the Consul General and Principal Officer of the United States for the consular district of Campeche, Quintana Roo, and Yucatan states.

Their meeting was part of the commemoration of the upcoming 250th anniversary of the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence.

During the recognition, Consul Thomas acknowledged the work of Governor Lezama. He expressed his appreciation for the state’s battle in combating corruption, strengthening security and fighting human trafficking.

Consul Thomas also expressed his gratitude for the security efforts carried out for the protection of millions of Americans who visit Quintana Roo every year.

“I am extremely grateful for your constant presence and participation in the Quintana Roo Citizen Security Roundtable, for the hundreds of cartel member arrests in the last year, for the increased efforts to combat human trafficking, and for the protection you provide to the millions of compatriots who visit Quintana Roo,” he said.

The Consul added that every year, the people of Quintana Roo warmly welcome their compatriots who choose these beautiful beaches, archaeological sites, and natural wonders as their favorite destination.

“Thousands more have made this region their home and have integrated into the vibrant Quintana Roo community.”

They met ahead of the official Freedom 205 celebrations May 12, 2026.

Through diplomatic, business and regional cooperation meetings promoted by the Embassy and consulates of the United States in Mexico, Freedom 250 seeks to promote joint actions in the areas of tourism, economic development, innovation, cultural exchange and institutional collaboration.

“The relationship between Quintana Roo and the United States is deep, vibrant, and everyday. It is expressed in our skies with the connectivity that unites our cities, it is expressed in our economy with investments, value chains, and business cooperation, and it is expressed in our communities where thousands of families share bonds of friendship, work, culture, and affection,” the Governor stated.
