Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Buildings to be used as emergency storm shelters are under inspection across the state. Authorities began inspecting buildings that could be used as possible shelters earlier this month.

Areas such as Tulum, Cancun and Riviera Maya have already established their Internal Civil Protection Committees who will deal with government coordination during weather emergencies.
Toni Chaves, President of the Riviera Maya Hotel Association, reported that an emergency hotel committee has also been established. This committee, headed Chaves, will be responsible for maintaining collaboration with authorities for evacuation, first aid, security, reconstruction and support for tourists in the event of a hurricane.
He also said constant training and preparation actions for hotel staff are being carried out ahead of the arrival of the season. He noted that although hurricane preparedness is deeply ingrained, it is necessary to review safety protocols.
“Our priority is always the safety of our employees and guests,” said Chaves.
Authorities are also working on agreements with transportation companies in the event of a storm. In the meantime, local officials continue to inspect buildings to be used and alternative shelters.
