Quintana Roo Director of Investigations reinstated after allegations of corruption

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — The State Director of Investigations has been reinstated. Pedro León Toro Peña was relieved of his Quintana Roo position in May after accusations of corruption.

In May, Pedro León Toro Peña threw a lavish 15th birthday party for his daughter that cost more than 4 million pesos. Suspicions of corrupt money arose due to the cost of the party since he is on a state police salary.

At the time, Quintana Roo Prosecutor Raciel López Salazar announced he had been temporarily relieved of his position pending an internal investigation. On Monday, López Salazar said that Pedro León Toro Peña had been reinstated as the Director of Investigations of Quintana Roo after a 120-day administrative investigation.

During the Monday morning press conference, Prosecutor López Salazar explained that Toro Peña was subjected to a 120-day administrative investigation to clarify the resources used to pay for the party.

According to López Salazar’s statements, “there was no administrative responsibility attributed to Toro Peña since the expenses were accredited by the family. The maternal grandmother paid the cost of the celebration, which was verified before the relevant authorities.

“It was the maternal grandmother who confirmed the expenses of the family event. Therefore, it was concluded that there was no administrative responsibility and he was reinstated in his position,” said the prosecutor.

Pedro León Toro Peña was appointed his Quintana Roo position in July of 2023 by Prosecutor López Salazar.
