Punta al Mar beach access road months behind due to ongoing Ejido road block

Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Q.R. — The beach access road being constructed through Felipe Carrillo Puerto continues to be blocked. Area Ejidos set up the Punta al Mar road block in November in protest of the construction of a military base on what they say is their land.

The group want the government to pay them compensation to build the 200-house base. In the meantime, more than two months of construction remains unfinished due to their protest.

Ejidos set to blocking the new Punta al Mar road after a federal highway roadblock failed. The group have denied access to machinery on the under-construction road since November 10.

The road, which was being built to provide the municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto with their first direct beach access, cannot be finished. State Secretary Cristina Torres says it is imperative the Felipe Carrillo Puerto Ejidos unblock the road to allow the state to finish construction.

Torres also says the federation will not pay Ejidos for land it owns. She says the state is open to talks, however, the Ejidos filed a claim, putting the issue in legal hands.

During a Friday talk between state officials and Ejidos, she said she “hopes that these are the last negotiations and that they understand that what is at stake is the progress and social and economic development of Felipe Carrillo Puerto.”

Torres said if the Ejidos continue the legal route, they will lose the trial since the federal government is not willing to pay for a piece of land that belongs to them. She also clarified that the land has been donated to the Secretary of National Defense (Sedena) for the construction of a housing unit for elements of the National Guard.
