Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Q.R. — A group of Felipe Carrillo Puerto ejidos continue to block a section of road in a land protest. The group are using a dump truck to prevent passage on a section of the newly constructed Puerta al Mar road.
The edijos are disputing ownership of a piece of that land they say belongs to Expo Maya, land that they own.
On November 4 personnel from the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena) arrived with heavy machinery to being the construction of a 200-room military base. However, a group of ejidos protested saying they own that land. When Sedena failed to stop construction, the group blocked highway access to the land.
The ejido group have prevented access to the Puerto al Mar road, a road being constructed by Sedena that will allow Felipe Carrillo Puerto residents direct beach access.
Ejido Commission President Edilberto Chan Beh says they will stay in place until there are talks with federal officials. “As long as there is no dialogue, we will remain here day and night,” he said.
According to Chan Beh, Mayor Mary Hernández, has always been invited to their assembly meetings, however, she has shown disinterest.
On Friday, elements of the National Guard, Mexican Army, Police and the State Attorney General’s Office secured the land being built on by Sedena. Yellow tape was placed around the property which is now being investigated for legal ownership.
