Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz says Puerto Morelos Civil Protection Coordination is making final preparations for the hurricane season. Those final preparations are being made days ahead of the official start of the tropical rainy season.

She indicated that of the 21 shelters, two in the municipal capital and two in Leona Vicario would be newly opened with sufficient capacity to receive and serve residents of low-lying, flood-prone areas and people with lightweight housing.
Civil Protection Coordinator Irma Ávila Méndez said that as a coastal community, Puerto Morelos must prepare for the possible arrival of a hurricane, not only with shelters, but also with programs to assist and assist the population living in vulnerable areas.
The municipality must also have evacuation plans and establish a committee to coordinate all activities before, during, and after a hurricane.
He said prior to the installation of the Specialized Committee on Hydrometeorological Phenomena for the 2025 Season, progress has been made in inspecting the buildings that would be used as shelters and that the necessary modifications have been requested.
Ávila Méndez said the municipality’s 19 largest-capacity hotels have begun submitting their lists of shelters. Over the weekend, a meeting will be held to provide information and finalize details.
