Puerto Morelos announces bank of new strategic projects

Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — The municipality of Puerto Morelos has a bank of strategic projects. The projects focus on territorial planning, universal accessibility, sustainable mobility and strengthening social and economic fabric.

Mayor Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz says in constructing the Puerto Morelos of the future, the Municipal Institute for Urban Development Planning (Implan) plays a vital role.

“Implan has provided us with the tools, research and studies necessary to build the municipality we aspire to. Its projects include a district park, the first Municipal Market in Villas Morelos II, the Animal Welfare and Control Centre and a bicycle network.

“These are projects we hope to make a reality in the medium term for the benefit of our population,” she commented.

She explained that the district park, planned for municipal property, will feature equitable and inclusive public facilities which will include pet areas, an amphitheater, a skate park, outdoor gym, kiosk, children’s playgrounds and coworking spaces.

The design prioritizes pedestrian connectivity, accessibility, native vegetation and social engagement, with criteria of resilience and urban comfort.

Regarding the proposed bicycle network, she said it would integrate the Maya Train stations and national parks with strategic corridors such as Joaquín Zetina Gasca, Timón and José María Morelos avenues.

The bike project includes green infrastructure, road signs and technical specifications that reduce the environmental footprint and promote non-motorized transportation.

Additionally, in coordination with the Mapaches MTB Puerto Morelos Cycling Club, the first BiciEscuela (bike school) is being implemented, to be announced in 2026, as an educational and community space for learning how to ride a bicycle and promoting safe mobility and cycling culture.

“The bike school will be unique in Quintana Roo and will offer practical and theoretical classes for all ages and levels, training in basic mechanics, traffic regulations and road safety, as well as talks on sustainable mobility, equity, health, and the rights of pedestrians and cyclists,” she added.

Víctor Aragón Madrigal, Director of Instituto Municipal de Planeación para el Desarrollo Urbano del Municipio (Implan), commented that the projects are developed with a focus on gender, sustainability and inclusion.

In the case of the municipal market, it was conceived as an urban hub to boost the local economy and strengthen social fabric with an accessible and functional design, sustainability criteria, inclusion and flexibility to adapt to merchants and users, consolidating a safe and dynamic space.

An Animal Control and Welfare Center will be built on the same property to meet the demand for services and spaces for pets in Puerto Morelos. This centre will include adoption areas, consulting rooms, quarantine areas, operating rooms and recovery areas. It will also include sterilization areas, a crematorium, euthanasia areas, a shelter with 61 cages, socialization areas, an examination area, a management area, a meeting room and a pharmacy.

He also noted that, with the goal of creating accessible, safe and autonomous pedestrian crossings for citizens and people with disabilities, three inclusive urban infrastructure projects were developed. They include horizontal and vertical signage, ramps with appropriate gradients, tactile guides, pedestrian lighting, and non-slip surfaces.

He said that these projects are expected to impact the entire population of Puerto Morelos in the medium term, where from now on, public works will invariably include inclusion and mobility criteria for people with disabilities.
