Puerto Aventuras, Q.R. — Municipal officials say a project to finish the airfield of Puerto Aventuras is moving forward so it can replace the airfield of Playa del Carmen.
The Director of the State Strategic Projects Agency (Ageproo), José Alberto Alonso Ovando, says the previously abandoned Puerto Aventuras airfield will be put into use this year.
He says they are currently working on finishing the aerodome in coordination with a private company. Once complete, the Puerto Aventuras airfield will be used instead of the Playa del Carmen airfield, which he says, has been affected by city growth.
“The runway was already built but it did not have space for passengers, safety facilities, taxiways so that the planes could communicate with the passenger terminal. Work is being done on this so that in the next few months the Playa del Carmen airport can be closed,” he said.
The Playa del Carmen aerodome is currently used by charter companies as well as tourist services and small private plane owners. He says the funding to finish the Puerto Aventuras airfield is an investment from a private company.
“It is private investment money that will provide the airstrip service to all individuals who want to go there. It is a joint investment, it is an issue that was discussed by the Agepro board, and without us having to put in public resources, this airstrip will be activated,” he said.
The Puerto Aventuras airfield is expected to be operational in 2025. Once up and running, the Playa del Carmen aerodome will be shut down. Alonso Ovando did not say what the municipality has earmarked for the PDC airfield land, which over the years, grew to be in central Playa del Carmen.
