Tulum, Q.R. — The Government of Tulum is working with the Secretaría de Marina (Semar) on the construction of a new naval station. The new Type A Advanced Naval Station site will be built on property near the Tulum International Airport.
A property of around 1,200 hectares has been tentatively earmarked for the future building of the station.
Bernabé Pech Ramírez, the General Secretary of the Tulum City Council reported that both sides are working on its possible construction starting with a public survey.
“In coordination with the Navy, they asked us for support to be able to conduct this survey of the population in Tulum and deliver the results. It is part of the requirements they request in their project that they delivered to their headquarters in Mexico City,” he explained.
While they do not yet have the exact location information on the future site, nor do they know a cost, “we have instructions from Mayor Diego Castañón to support the navy in everything they require to complete this mega project,” he said.
The purpose of this public consultation, Pech Ramírez said, is to protect national interests. The new station will carry out airspace surveillance functions on the southeastern border and will have a relevant role as a strategic logistics point to provide support in the event of natural disasters.
