Protesting ejidos lift Puerta al Mar blockade after reaching government agreement

Felipe Carrillo Puerto. Q.R. — After reaching an agreement with the Government of Quintana Roo, Felipe Carrillo Puerto ejidos have released the Puerta al Mar road. The road became the victim of a blockade during conflict over Expo Maya property more than two months ago.

Agreements were reached Wednesday after a meeting between the leaders of the Ejido Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Governor Mara Lezama and FCP mayor Maricarmen Hernández Solís.

Ejido leaders Demetrio Chan Bé, Miguel Hau Morales, Adriana Onofre and Carlos Koyoc, President, Secretary, Treasurer and supervisory board, respectively, agreed to lift the blockade after recognizing the political will of the parties to find mutual benefits.

In a statement, the ejido acknowledged that the Government of Quintana Roo prioritized social justice so that residents could freely enter their long-awaited beach access and that visitors could get to know the tourist destination that is part of Maya Ka’an.

During a general assembly, the ejidos approved the agreements that resolved the decades-old conflict of property ownership.

“We guarantee the citizens of the municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto and our visitors free passage to enjoy our natural resources and our gateway to the sea, as long as effective communication between governments and the ejido is respected and prioritized,” they said in a statement.

Ejidos agreed to open the road in a general assembly after meeting with the state government.

The Puerta al Mar road, which is more than two months behind due to the ejido blockade, will resume construction as a result of the recent agreement. The government is building the municipality’s first direct beach access road.

The road was blocked in November by disgruntled ejidos after the military began construction of a base on land the ejidos said they owned.
