Project to bury overhead wires underground started along Cancun’s Colosio Boulevard

Cancun, Q.R. — An large underground wiring project along Cancun’s Colosio Boulevard has been started. Cancun Mayor Ana Paty Peralta says the main objective is to improve the urban image of Luis Donaldo Colosio Boulevard.

A total of 12 kilometers of overhead wiring will be buried underground.

“We are supervising the coordinated work being done by the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), the Ministry of Communications and Transportation (SICT) and the various internet and telephone service companies in our city to install the underground cabling,” she said Monday.

She said that Public Services began with cleaning up excess wiring along the road which will eliminate high-voltage overhead lines along the city’s main artery. Peralta says the underground system will not only look better, but also be safter during tropical storms.

During the Monday tour, Peralta confirmed that the Public Services team cleaned up the excess cables that companies had not yet removed. The excess wires were also verified so that they could later be lowered into the ducts already assigned.

Peralta says 14 companies are participating in the program, who will work to install a total of 12 kilometers of underground cabling on Luis Donaldo Colosio Boulevard. According to Peralta, the underground wiring project will run from El Trébol bridge before the entrance to Cancun International Airport to the interchange at the junction of Tulum and Kabah avenues.

The task included the untangling and identification of excess wiring.

Some of the companies involved include CFE, Teléfonos de México (Telmex), Axtel, GIGNET, Izzi, GTAC, Abix Telecomunicaciones and Mega Cable, among others.
