Port Captains close water activities for second day due to strong winds around Cancun and Riviera Maya

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Water activities to small boats are off limits again today due to unstable weather. On Monday, a new front created strong winds that have continued into Tuesday, forcing Port Authorities to close navigation.

Protección Civil Cancun reported Tuesday morning “based on information issued by Port Captains, the following is reported: According to the weather bulletin GOLF-05-221225, the port is open to vessels over 40 feet in length but closed to vessels under 40 feet in length.”

Smaller vessels for fishing, tours and snorkeling will not be permitted to set sail, however, ferry services between Cancun and Isla Mujeres and Playa del Carmen-Cozumel are still running normally.

According to the marina report, wind and wave intensity is 27-32 km/h with gusts of 37 km/h creating wave heights of 0.60 meters.

“Therefore, it is recommended to stay tuned to the dissemination of weather reports and nautical advisories issued by this National Maritime Authority via VHF radio channel 16,” the state agency reported.

On Monday, the Quintana Roo Nautical Associates Association reported that the port captaincies of Isla Mujeres and Puerto Juárez (Cancun) suspended navigation to small vessels (under 40 feet) as a preventive measure.

That closure has continued into Tuesday due to the ongoing strong wind gusts. According to Mexico’s National Meteorological Service (SMN), those gusty winds are expected to stay in the region for the rest of the week.

The northern regions of the Yucatan Peninsula will continue to be affected by the frontal system that is generating winds of between 40 km/h to 60 km/h. Rain is also expected Tuesday in the north and central areas of Quintana Roo due to atmospheric instability over the Yucatan Peninsula.
