Cancun, Q.R. — Police are following a line of extortion in the broad daylight murder of a Cancun employee Wednesday. The woman was riding a motorcycle through a residential area when she was shot several times.
Residents who saw what happened tried to help as she lay against the sidewalk on her toppled bike. Police and paramedics arrived, however, the woman died before she could be helped.

According to local authorities, the woman was wearing a work uniform at the time of the shooting.
She was the employee of a company called Atlapa Business Corporation (Corporativo Empresarial Atlapa), a business associated with microcredits, collections and loans.
The woman is believed to have been hired to manage loan collections frequently associated with “gota a gota” or day-by-day lending.
Her attackers were not arrested. The State Attorney General (FGE) has begun an investigation into her murder. They say the company is being investigated for their alleged involvement in extortion.
“The Quintana Roo State Attorney General’s Office (FGE Quintana Roo) reports the opening of an investigation into the events that occurred in Cancun where a woman died from gunshot wounds,” the FGE reported in a statement Wednesday.
“According to initial findings, the victim was wearing a uniform from the Atlapa Business Corporation at the time of the incident. This corporation is currently under investigation by the Attorney General’s Office for its alleged involvement in extortion.

“As a result, the State Attorney General’s Office, in coordination with authorities at all levels of government, is pursuing several lines of inquiry including those related to the activities of the aforementioned company, to determine if there is any connection between the ongoing investigation and the events that occurred.”
The deceased woman has not been publicly identified.
