Cancun, Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Road closures have begun in every major city of the state starting with Cancun, where numerous traffic arteries were shut by police. Authorities were also out patrolling Cancun businesses, ensuring all non-essential companies were closed.
Eduardo Santamaría Chávez, municipal secretary of Public Security and Traffic, clarified that the cuts to circulation are not a curfew, explaining that the road closures, which also included Andrés Quintana Roo Avenue, are so that people can no longer access these areas, forcing businesses to close.
“The operation will be done throughout the city,” he said adding that “If there are open stores, there is a pretext to continue going out.” He said the road closures are not a curfew, because people can go outside, but they are being encouraged to do so only for the essentials.
Other cities including Playa del Carmen, Cozumel and Tulum implemented police patrols, shutting main roadways and encouraging people to stay home.
The additional restrictions come during the current national COVID-19 health emergency after Governor Carlos Joaquín González tightened public measures against the spread of coronavirus, which includes the closure of roads, mandatory use of mouth guards in public and the closure of all non-essential businesses.
