Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — The municipality of Playa del Carmen joined the new biometric CURP testing phase. Residents of Playa del Carmen were invited to the Civil Registry where they provided their biometric data for Mexico’s new CURP card.

Osman Corona Silva, Director of Civil Registry, said that a pilot program is underway to capture citizen information ahead of the program formally going into effect.
Mexico’s new CURP (Clave Única de Registro de Población) cards include biometric data such as facial photography, fingerprints and iris scans. The card, National Population Registry, is set to become the standard piece of accepted identification for Mexican residents.
The biometric data being added to the new card will enhance security of the current CURP cards issued by the Mexican government. The new digitalized identification will integrate into the new national system, which is scheduled to go into effect October 16, 2025.
Corona Silva said in coordination with the City Council, an information campaign will be launched to guide citizens on the procedure to update their CURP.
Last year, President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration launched the plan for the implementation of the biometric CURP.
The CURP is a document that has been used for years as a form of identification for Mexican citizens. The implementation of the new CURP system will be gradual, starting with Civil Registry modules and other authorized offices around the country.

Current pilot projects are being carried out in Mexico City, the State of Mexico, Veracruz and Playa del Carmen.
According to Arturo Arce Vargas, Director of the National Registry of Population, once the in-person process is complete, the new CURP card holder can download and laminate it.
