Playa del Carmen and Puerto Morelos next on free public Wi-Fi expansion list

Luis de Potestad, the Vice President of Public Affairs and Special Projects at GigNet, explained that the project in Playa del Carmen is already underway on Fifth Avenue, which he says, will have the best connectivity.

“We are going to start with a fiber deployment on Fifth Avenue to be able to provide connectivity on one of the most iconic avenues. In addition, it will also be available in Parque Fundadores, also one of the busiest points, since the ferries leave from there,” he said.

De Potestad said the installation is a comprehensive project that is being worked on with the municipality of Solidaridad to include the development of connectivity. He says that connectivity will eventually be expanded to include Puerto Morelos.

According to de Potestad, the seaside town will have free Wi-Fi installed in Fundadores Park in the Old Town for the end of the year. He says the Old Town has been found to be an area that requires better Internet and providing it through free Wi-Fi points will be a benefit.

The public hotspots in the Cancun Hotel Zone connects more than 2,000 devices per day.

De Potestad says their two public Wi-Fi stations in the Cancun Hotel Zone is used by more than 2,000 devices a day. In Tulum, between 650 to 700 devices per day use the service.

He says the company intends to keep expanding state connectivity, eventually reaching places such as Isla Mujeres and as far as Maya Ka’an.
