Physical assault and impersonating an officer some of the charges facing group

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Six people who were finally stopped on a Riviera Maya highway are in custody. Police say the driver of their SUV was ordered to stop in Cancun, however, he fled.

The State of Mexico-plated vehicle carrying six fled south and was eventually stopped on the federal highway in Playa del Carmen. Once stopped, all six began to verbally assault officers. One person from the group began to physically assault an officer.

Police reported Saturday that one of the men from inside the SUV claimed to be a police officer. Quintana Roo authorities are working to confirm his claim. In the meantime, all six remain in custody for disobedience and resistance.

According to the SSC (Secretary of Citizen Security), Leticia “N”, José Arturo “N”, Yareli Aracely “N”, Jocelyne “N”, Pedro Andress “N”, and Gilberto de Jesús “N” were arrested. They were taken into custody as suspects of Disobedience and Resistance by Private Individuals, Usurpation of Functions, and Falsification of Documents.

State Police officers from the Quintana Roo Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana (SSC) were conducting patrols for crime prevention when they observed a white Chevrolet Suburban merging recklessly. The vehicle was driving at excessive speed onto the road, forcing the police vehicle to brake sharply to avoid a collision.

Due to the driver’s evasive behavior, officers ordered the driver to stop, however, they  attempted to flee. Thanks to prompt intervention, the vehicle was intercepted on the Cancun-Tulum highway in the municipality of Playa del Carmen.

“Four women and two men got out of the SUV. The reason for the police intervention was explained to them. however, they began behaving aggressively, hurling insults and resisting the officers’ instructions,” police said.

“During the intervention, one of the women attempted to physically assault a police officer, an action that was promptly stopped, while the rest of the group continued pushing and insulting the officers.”

During a preventive search, José Arturo “N” was found in possession of an identification card with serial number SSC/BJ/057, which he used to identify himself as a member of the Benito Juárez Municipal Police.

Police said the card was seized for further investigation into the alleged crimes of impersonating a public official and falsifying documents.

The six detainees, as well as the white Chevrolet Suburban SUV with license plates from the State of Mexico, were impounded and turned over to the State Attorney General.
