Cancun, Q.R. — The mayor of Cancun says an additional mayor’s office for the Cancun Hotel Zone will not be created. Mayor Ana Patricia Peralta says the proposal to create a second mayor’s office to serve the Hotel Zone is not viable.
Peralta made the comment following the announcement of the imminent departure of the National Tourism Promotion Fund (Fonatur) from Cancun next year. Shortly after the announcement, Observatorio Legislativo Ciudadano proposed a mayor’s office be created to serve the Cancun Hotel Zone.
In their proposal, the group considered it necessary for local authorities to create a mayor’s office and citizen council to monitor and maintain the Cancun Hotel Zone. However, Peralta says the proposal was not considered viable. She said instead, they are looking for other mechanisms together with the state government.
“A mayor’s office, no, no, we do not consider it as such. There are many mechanisms that can be implemented. The Hotel Zone is a very important part of our tourist destination. We have to maintain it very well and we are going to do that.
“The mayor’s office is a proposal from someone else, but we are not considering it. Imagine a mayor’s office in the Hotel Zone and the center. No, that’s exactly what we don’t want,” she said.
Peralta says a plan for the Hotel Zone will be made with input from the state government and with the Fondo Nacional de Fomento al Turismo (Fonatur), who currently holds the resources for the maintenance of the Comprehensively Planned Centers.
Those resources will be transferred to the municipalities as Fonatur dissolves.
On November 16, Fonatur began selling off its undeveloped land. In Quintana Roo, 13 properties located in Lomas de Vista Hermosa in Cancun and 20 in Puerto Bello located in Cozumel were listed up for grabs.
