PDC’s Xcalacoco could become city’s second designated dog beach

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Authorities in Playa del Carmen are considering an additional dog beach due to congestion. Playa 72, the only designated dog beach in Playa del Carmen, has become overly crowded now that it has been delimited.

According to Sergio Beristain of the Dog Beach collective, the beach area where dogs are permitted is flanked by Blue Flag certified beaches. Dog owners are being monitored more closely to ensure pets stay within the Playa 72 boundaries.

Beristain says with the newly enforced limits, the beach has become very crowded, particularly on weekends, noting however, that new beach areas for dogs are being considered.

Beristain says currently on the table is Playa Xcalacoco in the city’s north. While Playa Xcalacoco itself is a Blue Flag certified beach, there are non-certified sandy areas surrounding it.

Playa 72 is becoming congested as the city’s only designated dog beach.

A second dog beach is a long-standing request by Playa del Carmen’s northern residents he reported, adding that meetings will need to be held with city officials and an agreement reached before another beach area can be designated.

He did not provide a possible timeline as to when Playa del Carmen may designated a second beach area for dogs.
