Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — The rehabilitation of Tenth Avenue has been put on hold due to money problems. The municipality has decided to reallocate the 42 million earmarked for Tenth to another project.
Rolando Mario Méndez Navarro, Secretary of Planning and Evaluation, says the project has been postponed due to a change in the municipality’s funding sources. He explained that given the instability in local tax collection, the decision was made to redirect the 140 million pesos originally earmarked for six public works projects to the FORTAMUN fund.
He says that money will instead be used to ensure payroll coverage and priority operations mostly in the area of Citizen Security. As part of this financial restructuring, six projects that did not yet have a contract or tender, including the rehabilitation of Tenth Avenue, were temporarily suspended.
Méndez Navarro says that a new tender process is being prepared which will take between 30 and 45 days before formal implementation begins. Once a contract has been awarded, the project will be funded with resources from the same federal program.
“The goal is for federal resources to arrive in a stable and timely manner. This reprogramming is a technical and responsible decision to prioritize essential municipal functions,” he explained.
Méndez Navarro emphasized that projects already underway will not be affected by the budget adjustment. Some projects that were halted due to weather conditions are being resumed with the commitment to meet the deadlines established in the contracts.
