Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — The company that owns a bus that lost its rear axle while transporting passengers is being investigated. The City of Playa del Carmen is looking into why company Transportes Urbanos del Carmen (Tucsa) failed to make the repairs to faults found during its last inspection.
On September 8 while providing public service to the Nicte Ha neighborhood, the rear axel of the bus broke. As the driver moved forward, the axel broke free of the bus, leaving the body to rest on the street.
According to official documents from the Transportation Directorate, the fault was found during a September 1 inspection, however, the company failed to make the repair.
A week later, the axle broke while the bus driver was traveling with passengers on 15th Avenue in the Nicte Ha neighborhood. According to passengers, the driver of the bus called the company for assistance, while several passengers reported the incident to the municipal Transit Department, who responded to the scene.

While there were no passenger injuries reported, an administrative investigation is underway to determine Tucsa’s liability for the incident.

Mayor Estefanía Mercado acknowledged the company’s current situation and announced that specific mobility and transportation actions will be implemented in 2026 to ensure greater safety in public passenger service in Playa del Carmen.
