PDC real estate company fined nearly 1.5 million for smoking out nearby neighborhoods

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Real estate company CADU has been fined nearly 1.5 million pesos. The company was fined after setting fire to a large mound of construction garbage that created thick smoke that suffocated nearby residents.

María de Lourdes Várguez Ocampo, the Secretaria de Medio Ambiente Sustentable y Cambio Climático en Solidaridad, said the fine was also for not having permits for the vegetation removal or to burn.

Ocampo, who heads the municipality’s Sustainable Environment and Climate Change, said the company has since applied for those permits. Their standing will be reviewed after August 30, which is the deadline to pay the fine.

CADU (Corpovael SA de CV) has offered to pay for the medical expenses of the 80 area residents affected by the smoke due to the fires they created.

Municipal firemen tried on several occasions to extinguish the stubborn fire, which kept reigniting, smoking out residential areas.

According to Ocampo, the fire has been fully extinguished for more than a week, however, her department continues to carry out the corresponding inspections with the intention of corroborating that the fire has been completely extinguished.

Earlier this month the real estate company, who are building a new subdivision in west Playa del Carmen, were fined for burning without permits. After putting out the fire, it reignited, which lead to days of intense thick smoke and complaints from area residents.
