PDC real estate project suspended for illegal burning

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — An intentionally set garbage fire that burned four days has finally been put out by Playa del Carmen firemen. The fire, which was started in the el Edén subdivision, was set by a real estate development company that is building in the area.

Due to the illegal burning, Civil Protection has since shut down their project.

Alejandro Contreras, the Director of Solidaridad Firefighters, reported that the materials fire was set in the El Edén subdivision by the CADU construction company. Machinery was used to pile unwanted construction material into a heap where it was left to burn, generating thick smoke.

“This was a fire that the construction company CADU set. There are piles of wood and everything else that was moved by the machinery. They accumulated it and made a pile and that is what has been affecting the area for approximately four days,” he said.

He said the fire was finally put out over the weekend at which time Civil Protection personnel went to the site to verify the burn. According to Contreras, while the company had permits to build, they did not have permits to burn.

“On this occasion, work is once again suspended due to the activity they are carrying out without having notified the competent authorities, in this case Civil Protection and the municipal environmental department,” he said.

Contreras said it is up to the company to use machinery to spread out the now-extinguished fire remains to allow for cooling to prevent another flair up.

Civil Protection has since placed temporary suspension seals on the project. The real estate development company has been building a new subdivision in the city’s extreme southwest for approximately three months.
