Passenger heading for Havana arrested inside Cancun International after X-ray reveals false bottom

Cancun, Q.R. — A passenger about to board a plane at Cancun International bound for Cuba has been arrested. The unnamed man was taken into custody over the weekend by National Guard from inside the airport after a luggage X-ray revealed a false bottom.

The man was pulled aside and his luggage manually inspected by Customs Agents who located a false bottom hiding cocaine. The narcotics were found during an X-ray scan of his luggage.

In compliance with the Mexican Government’s National Security Strategy, members of the National Guard arrested the man found transporting cocaine in his luggage as he attempted to board a flight at the Cancun International Airport in Quintana Roo.

National Guard inside the airport were alerted by agents of the X-ray area after noticing irregularities in a leather suitcase. The leather bag was on the belt and property of a passenger who intended to travel to Havana, Cuba.

To corroborate the presence of a prohibited, a narcotics dog was used to confirm the substance, as well as an analysis, which also tested positive for the presence of a white powder with the characteristics of cocaine.

“During a detailed search of the suitcase, they located a false bottom containing a package that was analyzed using equipment to detect illicit substances and confirmed to be cocaine hydrochloride. The suitcase’s owner was arrested,” National Guard reported.

The passenger was read the Bill of Rights for Persons in Detention, registered in the National Registry of Arrests and taken to the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office in Cancun.
