Passenger arrested assaulting taxi driver after refusing her form of payment

Cancun, Q.R. — Police arrested a Cancun taxi passenger Friday after she assaulted the driver who refused her form of payment. The altercation happened on Avenida Lak’in when the female passenger arrived at her destination after a previous stop.

The woman hailed the cab from Miguel Hidalgo Avenue in SM 109 where she directed the driver to take her to two different places, the second being a grocery store on Avenida Lak’in.

When the taxi driver asked for payment outside the store in SM 259, she offered him pieces of copper wire (to sell) in place of cash. When he refused the wire, she hit him in the head with a glass jar.

Others who saw what happened kept the woman at the scene while the man found police. The Cancun taxi driver hailed down an oncoming police car where the woman, authorities have since identified as Hainery “N”, was taken into custody.

“During patrol, officers from the Secretariat of Citizen Security, in coordination with the Secretariat of the Navy, noticed a man who, upon seeing the patrol car, raised his hand in a signal for help,” police reported.

“A white Nissan Tsuru with green markings of the “Andrés Quintana Roo” taxi drivers’ union was parked in front of him.

“As they approached, he informed them that a woman, who was nearby surrounded by several neighbors, had punched him in the forehead. The incident occurred on Miguel Hidalgo Avenue between Bugambilia Avenue and Tulipanes Avenue, in SM 259.

“The man explained that the woman had hailed his taxi on Avenida Miguel Hidalgo, Route 5, near Region 103, requesting service to take her to the end of Route 5 and then to a supermarket located on Avenida Lak’in.

Upon arrival, she told him she had no money to pay and offered to pay with scraps of copper wire, which the taxi driver refused. She then struck him on the head with a glass jar.”

Police said the woman was taken into custody and the taxi driver  transported to the “Andrés Quintana Roo” taxi drivers’ union clinic for medical treatment.
