Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — A passenger was airlifted to a Playa del Carmen hospital Tuesday evening from a single vehicle highway accident. Scores of emergency services were at the scene of the Puerto Morelos crash that left more than a dozen injured along the federal 307.

According to National Guard Communications Coordinator Lieutenant Irving Alcaraz Torres, 14 people from inside the public combi were injured in the accident that happened around 7:00 p.m. Tuesday. Of those 14, one male passenger was listed as serious and airlifted to hospital.

Emergency services from Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen and Cancun met at the Puerto Morelos accident site to work the scene. The SSC (Secretary of Citizen Security) reported on the use of their new Bell 407 helicopter from Playa del Carmen to airlift one passenger from the crash.
“Thanks to the helicopter of our Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana (SSC) and with the support of Civil Protection, we immediately responded to the call for help following the accident in Puerto Morelos.

“We carried out the aerial transfer, rescuing a seriously injured person. He was transferred for urgent medical care. This is how we respond in Playa del Carmen: with speed, coordination, and a commitment to life,” the SSC reported.
Rescue and emergency services worked to treat those injured in the single vehicle accident. A set of black skid marks were left on the pavement where the driver attempted to brake hard. The passenger van hit at least one pole at highway speed before overturning.

“We proudly recognize the work of our Citizen Security Secretariat and the Playa del Carmen Civil Protection team, who bravely and effectively participated in the aerial rescue following the accident in Puerto Morelos.

“Thanks to their rapid response, professionalism, and coordination, a seriously injured person is now receiving medical care. This is how you save a life: with commitment, equipment, and heart. Because when it comes to protecting life, our commitment and our humanism know no bounds,” the SSC said.
The public combi was running a Cancun-Playa del Carmen route at the time of the accident when a rear tire blew, causing the van to leave the highway and land on its side.
