Over 55 tons of sargassum cleared from island’s Playa Chumul in latest seaweed roundup

Cozumel, Q.R. — More than 55 tons of sargassum was collected from a Cozumel beach Saturday. It was the third mass sargassum beach clean organized by the municipality so far this season.

Personnel from the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat) organized the event where 500 people cleared over 55 tons of washed up seaweed. Cozumel Mayor Chacón Méndez thanked public servants, civil associations and Marines from the National Secretariat of the Navy for their participation.

Irwin Javier Batún Alpuche, the Director of Zofemat Cozumel, explained that the operation is part of the work plan implemented since the start of the current administration, which prioritizes maintaining the island’s coastal strip in optimal condition.

He explained that the areas with the highest concentration of sargassum are located on the eastern coast, and on this occasion, the Playa Chumul lookout point was cleared.

Sargassum is piled onto homemade stretchers and walked up a sand embankment to a waiting truck for removal.

The collected material is transported to a collection center in the south of the island where it is dried and then safely re-entered into the environment, ensuring responsible management of the natural waste.

He said the municipality affirms its commitment to environmental protection and public health, ensuring that Cozumel’s beaches continue to be one of Mexico’s top tourist attractions and a source of pride for the local community.
