Cozumel, Q.R. — More than 2,000 athletes are expected this weekend for the island’s Full Ironman competition. Triathletes from 81 countries, some as far away as Iceland, traveled to the island to compete on Sunday.
Elías Farah Ceh, the Director of Tourism and Economic Development, says this year for the 17th edition of Ironman Cozumel 2025, just over 2,000 people will participate and that some streets will be temporarily closed Sunday during the event.
“The street closures are only temporary but the benefits that hosting the event brings to the destination last much longer,” he said, adding that participants video the event and share it on social media, offering the island a form of free publicity.
“All participants and their companions take videos and photos that they instantly share on their social media, showcasing the natural beauty of the magical town of Cozumel and creating priceless publicity,” he said.

Likewise, the head of tourism recalled that the low seasons for hotel occupancy and tourist arrivals have been replaced by what is now known as the sports season, which considerably increases the number of rooms occupied in hotels.
At 7:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 23 at the Cozumel Marina, the starting gun will fire for the 2,078 triathletes from 81 countries and 1,238 cities.
Nineteen percent of the athletes are women and the remaining 81 percent are men.
At a press conference Friday, the organization said record indicates that there are approximately 100 professional triathletes attending this year.
The countries with the largest representation are Mexico, the United States, Canada, Germany and Brazil.
