Costa Maya, Q.R. — More than 50 tons of accumulated sargassum was collected from Xcalak shores Wednesday. A group of over 200 participated in the mass beach clean up after ongoing strong winds left the area covered in seaweed.

According to municipal Mayor Yensunni Martínez, public servants and local volunteers removed more than 50 tons of the brown macroalgae. The seaweed was collected from the water along the coastline as well as on the beach.
Volunteers used baskets and nets to scoop floating sargassum from the water to waiting trucks from where it was eventually hauled away. Heavy machinery was also used in the day-long clean up efforts to restore the natural sandy areas.

In a message, Othón P. Blanco Mayor Yensunni Martínez said “together, united and always on the ground, we arrived in the community of Xcalak to begin a massive beach cleanup, together to address the arrival of sargassum and prepare for the upcoming Easter holiday season.

“Thanks to the community, council members, the Navy, the Municipal Police, the Municipal Delegate, the Subdelegate, and all the public servants who joined this effort to continue transforming Xcalak and our entire municipality and who joined us in the cleanup of Xcalak beach where we collected more than 50 tons of sargassum.”
