Cancun, Q.R. — City environmental officials released an osprey that had been rescued after it was found injured in Cancun. On Tuesday, the bird was released back into the wild after being cared for by specialists.
Cancun Mayor Ana Paty Peralta participated in the release of the osprey that was rescued from a Cancun balcony Saturday.

Fernando Haro Salinas, the city’s Director of Ecology, explained that on May 9, a citizen reported seeing the bird on a residential balcony. Due to strong winds, the bird was pushed into the building where it fell onto a balcony.
The bird was found with injuries to both wings.
Haro Salinas said a building resident of Puerto Cancun reported the incident to emergency 9-1-1. Municipal personnel went to the apartment personnel from the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa).
After its rescue, he said, the bird was transferred to the Fauna Digna AC association, who were in charge of its rehabilitation and care.

“According to experts, it was a juvenile specimen that was changing its plumage and, due to the strong winds that day, it lost control in flight and fell, presenting two wounds on both wings that were completely healed with medication,” he said.
“We released the bird that, thanks to a citizen report and with the help of the Ecology team and the Natural Resources department, and with the support of an expert caretaker, was ready to fly after two days,” he said from the shore of Puerto Juárez where the bird was released.
Haro Salinas said that they continually receive wildlife reports around the city of Cancun, which is why they work in permanent coordination with both specialists and federal authorities to be able to respond.
